If you're serious about becoming a freelance writer, I'd suggest making yourself write at least one article a day. It doesn't have to be long ; I'd suggest focusing on quality and content. If you're serious about doing this as a profession, you can't just write "when the mood suits", you need to be able to do this whenever called up. Once you've written a few articles, you can select the best to use in your portfolio...and you might even be able to adapt past articles to current projects that you've been hired for.
"Use Web sites for writers to further develop your writing skills and to peruse freelance job opportunities. A simple search for "writing" or "writers" at a major search engine like Google should get you off to a good start."
Uh, that's bad advice unless you want to be combing through about 5 million hits!
